Uzbekistan. Improving capacity of PHC providers on HIV prevention

With regard to reformation of primary health care PHC system in Uzbekistan, PHC providers are to carry out more duties on population sanitation and prevention of various infections. Thus, active PHC specialists’ efforts are focused on prevention and reduction of the most dangerous diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, STI, tuberculosis, drug addiction, etc. Under technical assistance of CAPACITY the training module for General practitioners on "HIV prevention and stigma and discrimination reduction toward vulnerable groups” was developed and approved by MoH.

The Module is planned to be incorporated into curriculums of TIAME in August 2008 and GP Training Centersin September 2008. In this connection according to the signed MoH order two ToTs for teachers of TIAME, GP training centers and RAC epidemiologists were conducted in collaboration with Health — II Project/WB.

During the training the participants studied such issues as history, epidemiology and clinical classification of HIV-infection, got familiarized with HIV-related opportunistic infections, clinical course of HIV-infection in children, ART, VCT etc. Moreover, the participants discussed issues related to stigma and discrimination toward vulnerable population. The final day of the training was devoted to improvement of participants’ skills in conducting the training for GPs in regions.

According to joint plan of activities with Health — II it is planned that the prepared trainers will train chief infectious diseases doctors of regional, rayon and city levels during series of snowball trainings. The latter, in their turn, will train GPs of PHC. Thus, all GPs of the Republic are planned to be covered by training in a short period of time.
