Uzbekistan. Prevention of HIV among general population through Mahallas

According to its civil society mobilization strategy CAPACITY initiated the joint plan development with national and international partners (project Health-2, Republican Fund "Mahalla”, RAC, Institute of Health and CAPACITY) on increasing of population awareness level on HIV issues and stigma and discrimination reduction towards vulnerable groups among population with involvement of Mahalla leaders.

Within the frameы of joint plan realization CAPACITY provided technical and methodological assistance in conducting of orientation meeting for representatives from 5 regions of Uzbekistan (Samarkand, Bukhara, Termez, Tashkent, Tashkent oblast). Specialists from oblast AIDS Centers, oblast branches of "Mahalla” Fund and Institute of Health/MoH who are responsible for successful implementation of joint plan on regional level participated in the meeting.

During the meeting the participants were acquainted with present situation on HIV/AIDS in Uzbekistan and discussed the necessity of involving mahalla leaders into HIV prevention activities among population. In the course of the meeting oblast plans on activities realization were developed and signed.

Moreover, M&E group members — Institute of Health specialists studied methodology of survey conducting on evaluation of population awareness level on HIV issues and gained skills of work with electronic database on survey results processing developed under the CAPACITY support.

At the present time according to the joint plan the initial survey is being conducted in 5 regions of Uzbekistan. Later it is planned to conduct ToT for oblast and district representatives of "Mahalla” Fund on preparing mahalla leaders.
