The CAPACITY Project supports activities aimed at raising youth awareness on HIV/AIDS/STI

Taking into account the current situation in South-Kazakhstan oblast, the CAPACITY Project initiated organization of experience exchange between two medical universities – Kazakh National Medical University and South-Kazakhstan State Medical Academy, with the purpose to increase awareness of students of medical and non-medical universities in the issues of HIV/AIDS/STI and thus decrease stigma and prevent discrimination of people living with HIV (PLH).

After discussing this proposal with heads of Republican AIDS Center, SK AIDS Center, KazNMU and SKSMA and getting approval, the CAPACITY Project organized a meeting with instructors of SKSMA and instructors from the KazNMU Chair of Microbiology and Immunology. KazNMU Chair of Microbiology and Immunology has a 19-year expertise in conducting medical conferences on HIV/AIDS issues at the Medical University, as well as the expertise in work with non-medical universities on questionnaire and students training.

At the meeting with KazNMU on 29-30 January, 2007 Microbiology and Immunology Chair representatives shared their gained experience in conducting conferences, HIV/AIDS related education trainings and sessions for students, training modules and available materials.

The CAPACITY Project in cooperation with SKSMA instructors developed plan of activities on realization of this proposal by Medical Academy in South-Kazakhstan oblast. The Project prepared documents on HIV/AIDS stigma and discrimination, brochures on HIV/AIDS prevention, condoms and questionnaires.

In the future, it was decided to involve South-Kazakhstan Business Women Association and specialists of Healthy Lifestyle into the students’ training activities.
