Turkmenistan. Educating and empowering vulnerable populations.

On June 8–11, 2009, a workshop for the Drop-In Center specialists was held on increasing the level of knowledge and skills necessary to conduct HIV and STI prevention activities among vulnerable groups. The workshop was led by an international consultant of the Consulting and Diagnostic Center "Hope”, from Kostanay, the Republic of Kazakhstan. The participants of the workshop were specialists and volunteers of the Drop-In Center of HIV prevention for injecting drug users (IDUs). The workshop sessions covered the major issues such as HIV epidemic, principles of HIV prevention among IDUs, principles of needs and rights of clients, the hardships of initiating HIV prevention programs for target groups, peculiarities of information disseminating, requirements for conducting outreach work, models and assessment of the effectiveness of outreach work, etc. Knowledge and skills gained at the workshop will be used further by the Drop-In Center specialists and volunteers to conduct HIV prevention work for IDUs.
