On September 26–27, 2008 the initiative group, representing people living with HIV, organizations working with PLH and other interested partners, with the financial and technical support of the CAPACITY Project initiated the meeting of PLH. During the course of the meeting the following issues were reviewed and discussed: increasing the participation of PLH in developing the national policy on HIV, preparing proposals and recommendations to be included into the package of services for PLH drafted by the CAPACITY Project, and unifying the above organizations into a single legal entity. The meeting resulted with the establishment of the Union of PLH in Kyrgyzstan – the first in the history of the country, the constitutors of which became three organizations of people living with HIV, development and approval of the mission, goals and objectives of the Union, election of the Union Presidium and its Chair, as well as development of the draft of the package of services for PLH, which will be finalized and presented at the regional workshop organized by the CAPACITY Project in October 2008. more »

In the frame of further implementation of joint plan on raising population awareness on HIV prevention with makhalla involvement in 5 regions of Uzbekistan CAPACITY in collaboration with "Health-II”/WB provided technical assistance in educating mahalla leaders of Bukhara and Samarkand cities. The trainings were conducted according to the training module, developed under the CAPACITY’s assistance. During the trainings the participants were acquainted with basic information on HIV, discussed issues related to HIV prevention and stigma/discrimination reduction towards vulnerable groups of population and improved skills on working with population. more »

More that 2200 teenagers from 17 schools of Dashoguz city were involved in information and education campaign aimed at HIV/STI and drug use prevention and healthy life style. This activity was conducted by national trainers which were trained by National AIDS prevention Center with CAPACITY support. more »

Tajikistan. Integrating HIV services in primary health care
CAPACITY provided technical assistance to establish a thematic working group (TWG) on reducing stigma and discrimination among primary health care (PHC) staff against PLHIV. Participants of the TWG include representatives from the Department of Family Medicine, Tajik State Medical University, the Tajik Institute of Post-Diploma Medical Education, Republican Clinical Training Center for Family Medicine, Department of Infectious Diseases, and Republican AIDS Center. The TWG has developed a draft training module for PHC staff. The draft has been sent to local and international partners for their comments and recommendations. It will be discussed at a round-table next month. more »

Kyrgyzstan. Capacity building of local AIDS service organizations.
In September 2008 CAPACITY completed second stage of Civil Society Mobilization Strategy which was started back in November 2007 when the Regional Training of Trainers took place. The Regional TOT was followed by oblast-level trainings on institutional and organizational development for AIDS-service organizations in Chui, Jalalabat, Batken and Osh oblasts and Bishkek city. more »

On September 15–19 CAPACITY jointly with hired consultants and Almaty city AIDS Center conducted more than 15 meetings with representatives of organizations where VCT services are provided including: AIDS Center, policlinics, maternity hospital, pre-natal clinics, clinical hospitals, TB dispensary, trust points and public organizations. The goal of these meetings was to conduct a survey to identify existing problems related to provision of VCT services. On 18 September CAPACITY conducted an orientation meeting with all organizations involved in situation analysis and discussed possible activities to improve the current situation. It is anticipated that the consultants will provide a report and recommendations to overcome existing problems and improve the quality of VCT services. more »

Within the framework of joint activities with Social Initiative Support Fund CAPACITY/USAID provided technical assistance in conducting series of youth actions "We are for healthy lifestyle we have no time for anything else” in Bukhara, Navoi, Samarkand and Karshi cities. The participants of the actions were students of institutes of higher education, colleges, and non-organized youth. Besides, students of senior school no 32 (Bukhara), Olympic reserves special sport college’s students and participants of marathon "Health in family” (Navoi), members of city tourist club, participants of ensemble of national creativity and representatives of city mass media (Samarkand) took part in the actions. more »

Kazakhstan. Integration of HIV/AIDS services
CAPACITY is providing technical assistance to Karaganda oblast Health Department and Oblast AIDS Center to prepare for the pilot project in Temirtau on integration of ARVT into primary health care. On August 27–28, CAPACITY supported working meetings jointly with Temirtau AIDS-service organizations and PHC facilities. During the meetings, participants — members of the local working group — discussed aspects of development of the basic approaches to the complex management of patients on ARV treatment and agreed on the development of a joint plan of action on integration including a training program on ARVT for PHC specialists and the development of an oblast prikaz on integration more »
